Thanksgiving in Ghana.

For our Thanksgiving, the senior missionaries (that's us!) and employees were invited to the Dickson's for the afternoon. Everyone brought a dish, and we literally had a feast. There are a few people who are at the end of their calling, so we used this time to say our official good-byes, which is sad, because we've grown to really love and enjoy all of them. Sister Ngoran will go back to the Ivory Coast. She has been my "coach" as I try to learn French.

There were 40 of us for dinner - and the place settings were really lovely. Someone had accumulated yards of African patterns to serve as the tablecloths.

Each table had some kind of African centerpiece and this doll was my favorite.

We sometimes have to hunt for ingredients (it becomes kind of a game!), but each of the dishes tasted so good. It's fun to share recipes and then also share which market carries the needed items. These ladies have such ingenuity...

We sang a group song before dinner - David was right next to me so he is the easiest to hear. I wanted to capture the song, but also pan around the interior of the house.

Each person who is leaving Ghana had a turn to share his/her feelings. We've been here almost 6 weeks, and I can't believe how close we feel to everyone; even though we are sad at the changes, we are really excited for these friends to return to their families.

The rest of Ghana carried on with their normal work day, after all it was a regular Thursday for them. But for us, it felt like we had transported a little parcel of America to Africa. It was fun to eat, laugh, and hug. We all miss our families, but in a few years after this is all over, we realize we will look back at this time and miss these cute people with whom we have made such fast friendships.

  1. Who are the Dickerson's? I'm guess their place is a little bigger than yours if they hosted 40...

Glad you were able to be around friends for Thanksgiving. We missed you here at home, but are glad you're doing good things.

Weather here is 85 and beautiful. Love seeing dad in short-sleeve white shirts.

  2. I was so dazzled by the prophet ensemble that pretty much everything else escaped me (with the possible exception of David's hymn lyrics). Did she make this herself, or did she go to one of the local seamstresses? Where did this material come from? Did all the prophets fit on the sleeves? Totally amazing!

  3. Everyone had a copy of the lyrics except me. I think Delynn was sitting on our copy.

  4. I'm not sure where Sister Ngoran got her fabric, but I'm sure she had it made. There are many, many seamstresses here. Darling outfit!
President Dickson is the area President and the church owns 3 beautiful homes here..all right next to each other in a gated community. They host half the parties for us, and the temple President hosts the other half; he, however, lives in our apartment building..with the commoners. Cute people.

  5. That is the Africa West Area Presidency presenting lovely scarves (with a Ghana Temple design) to our departing friends, Dave and Jill Borden. They are finishing their 4th(!) Family History mission to Ghana, and they will have Christmas with their kids in Idaho. Dave is a retired principal and loved talking education with us. We will miss them dearly. From l to r, Elder Joseph Sitati--1st counselor (and first General Authority from Africa), Sr. Sitati, Sr. Dickson, Elder John Dixon--Area President and fellow Washingtonian, the Bordens, Sr. Curtis, Elder LeGrande Curtis, 2nd C. All three men are 70's and great role models. They have been so kind to us.

  6. What a great Thanksgiving. It seems that there are many Americans there. Are some of them also serving missions? We talked to one of the Assistants today that said he spent 4 months there in Ghana when he was 20 (about 4 years ago) teaching English.

What an amazing experience you're having. You know how fun that was to see the video (and hear that some things never change, mostly men don't know the words!). Thanks for the fun blog.

  7. I had to get in a little dig on you, David, especially after the funny "why is Elder Wigg's picture next to the chubby monkey"? comment.

Thanks for all you are doing to further the work!

  10. I printed up your last two posts for mom and sent them. Please ask Elder Dixon if he served in the Philippines. Two senior missionaries before us were the Dixon's but I did not know his first name. Let me know.
